Job Application Tracker in Excel: Use the CSV

Export your job list as a CSV, open it in Excel, and add two formulas that count statuses and show days since you applied.

To use a job application tracker in Excel, export your list as a CSV and open it in Excel. Each application is one row. Then add a COUNTIF formula to count statuses and a TODAY formula to show how many days it has been since you applied. The free Job Log tracker exports a CSV with seven columns, so there is no template to buy or set up.

How do I get my list into Excel?

  1. In Job Log, click Export CSV.
  2. In Excel, click the cell where the data should start. On the Data tab, in Get & Transform Data, click From Text/CSV.
  3. Pick the file and click Import. If the columns do not split, change the Delimiter in the preview.
  4. Click Load. The data lands on a new worksheet.

(Microsoft: Import or export text or CSV files) You get Company, Role, Link, Date applied, Status, Next step and Notes. Job Log writes dates as YYYY-MM-DD.

Which two formulas are worth adding?

Put them in new columns to the right of your data, with the header in row 1.

  • Status counts: =COUNTIF(E2:E9,"Applied") counts the rows in column E that say Applied. Change the word for Received, Interview and the rest. (Microsoft: COUNTIF)
  • Days since you applied: =TODAY()-D2, filled down. Excel may show the result as a date, so set the cells to Number. (Microsoft: TODAY)

What does that look like on a real list?

This is a made-up export of eight applications, read on 2026-11-06. Dates are in column D, statuses in column E, rows 2 to 9.

CompanyDate appliedStatusDays since (2026-11-06 minus date)
Northwind Labs2026-10-19Applied18
Fabrikam Health2026-10-20Received17
Contoso Freight2026-10-21Interview16
Tailspin Foods2026-10-21Rejected16
Adatum Energy2026-10-26Applied11
Litware Bank2026-10-28Applied9
Proseware2026-11-02Applied4
Wingtip Toys2026-11-03Applied3

=COUNTIF(E2:E9,"Applied") returns 5. The other counts are Received 1, Interview 1 and Rejected 1, which adds up to 8. Three of the eight have a reply, so 3 / 8 = 37.5%.

The Job Log FAQ says most replies take 3 to 10 days. Look for Status = Applied with 10 or more days. Northwind Labs (18) and Adatum Energy (11) qualify. Litware Bank (9), Proseware (4) and Wingtip Toys (3) are still inside the normal window.

How do I get it back into Job Log?

Delete the two formula columns first, so the file has only the seven original columns. Then choose File, Save As, and set Save as type to CSV (Comma delimited). Excel will warn that only the current worksheet is saved and that some features may not carry over. Click OK, then Yes. In Job Log, click Import CSV and pick the file. Columns match by name, so keep the headers as they were. (Microsoft: save as CSV)

Checklist before you rely on the sheet

  • Keep dates as YYYY-MM-DD. To force that format in Excel, select the cells, press Ctrl+1, pick Number, then Custom, and type yyyy-mm-dd (Microsoft: format a date).
  • Keep the six status words: Applied, Received, Interview, Offer, Rejected, Closed. Unknown statuses become Applied on import.
  • Job Log keeps your list in your browser on your device, and clearing site data removes it. Keep an exported copy.
